It's Slovak public holiday, which is on 17th November
This day is also known International Student Day
We celebrate it from the year 2001 by leaving flowers or candles on certain public places, where people were demonstrating
This day brought not only Czechoslovakia, but also millions of other people in middle and eastern Europe the coveted freedom, democracy and faith in human rights
What happened on this day?
College students decided they have enough of taking people's freedom away and they had organized illegal meetings in Prague and Bratislava on 16th November 1989, where they were all talking about what they want to achieve with their demonstration.
On 17th November 1989, the 1st day of demonstration members of Public safety (police) had beaten few demonstrating students in Prague. After this brutal act by the police, on 21st November students from all colleges started demonstrating, then theaters and actors joined them and after them, more and more groups of citizens.
On 27th November, a general 2-hour demonstration took place and in Slovakia was formed an association called The Public Against Violence and in Czechia an association called Civic Forum was formed.
With the events of 17th November 1989, student demonstrations, began the Gentle or the Velvet revolution, and gradually events in support of students and in expressing opposition to the socialist establishment gained momentum until they resulted in the demise of communism.
